Instrument Landing System (ILS) Category I, II and III.

The Instrument Landing System (ILS) is the approach and landing aid system established by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) as a standardized system worldwide. This control system allows an aircraft to be precisely guided during the approach to the runway and, in some cases, along the runway.

It is the most famous help that aircraft have for the approach is called ILS. They are the acronym for Instrument Landing System, and although there are currently other more modern aids such as RNAV approaches, PBN procedures in general, ILS continues to be the most popular approach procedure at airports around the world.

The ILS itself has different categories depending on the visibility and cloud ceiling requirements. The lower the meteorological requirement (lower cloud ceiling or lower visibility) the more precision is needed and it is named with a higher category. The categories are divided into CAT I, II and III. Within category III we find three subdivisions A, B and C, the latter being the one with the highest precision since it allows landing with 0 meters of visibility and with the cloud ceiling attached to the ground.
